Punch Drunk Love from Sacred Sound

The morning after! Feeling a little hungover, yet really good.

That is what it feels like today after a 90 minute session Sacred Sound Sanctuary. Melinda Kinzie best describes her work as ”part shamanic sound healing journey & energy medicine salon”. And that is exactly what it is. She began with a brief opening about sound healing and our energetic bodies, setting intentions and allowing your body to do what it needs because it still receives the healing. Then off we went to Never Never Land!

I will admit it was a challenging for me to completely shut my brain off during the session; however, as I lay there I knew my body, brain, soul, energetic bodies were receiving so much. The first half of the class, felt like my body was releasing stagnant energy that was no longer needed. It felt as deep as my bones. There were rattles and drums and Melinda’s voice chanting complimented all of the sounds. Then she began to lay the Crystal Singing bowls and it’s as if the room was full of angels. The energy was calming, healing and full of light.

Coming back to reality was a transition and as the owner of the studio having to move back into the regular swing of things, I stayed mindful of moving slow and minimizing conversation. So many left with prayers to the heart and a bow of the head.

By the time, I got home last night, I felt light. Bright. Joyful. Full of ease. It felt really good to be in my body. My sleep last night was so deep and restful.

Today, I woke up feeling slightly hungover. My body felt different, yet good. So of course, I wanted to search and try to find an explanation online. However, I told myself to just feel. Until Melinda texted me and then I was able to ask her. This is what she said: “Most of us are running on a fair amount of adrenaline these days and most of us have some degree of adrenal fatigue. So when we go into a rest & letting go that is that deep, our bodies do not experience it in an hour and a half. Our bodies are not linear. We really come into the truth of where our body is actually at. Our endocrine system is at peace and calm. It is not experiencing adrenaline or cortisol. A lot of time people feel really tired because you are actually hearing where your body really is. The epsom salt bath afterwards is great because there is a lot of shifting in the electrolytes in the body. Lot of changes in the brain, pineal glands. A lot of neurological patterns melting in the brain that are no longer needed. We are having release.”

Spring is Time for New Beginnings

Many feel that Spring is the time of awakening; a time to set resolutions; and a time to move forward. The trees are budding. Many animals are giving birth to their young. The energy is fresh and light after many months of shortened and cold days. We are ready to shed the heaviness of the winter months. 

Naturally, we have the desire to clean our homes, eat lighter foods and spend more time outside. In Chinese Medicine, Spring is associated with the Wood Energy of the Liver & Gall Bladder Channels. This is the budding energy of new things. The excitement of longer days and warmer weather. 

The Liver is also seen as the General of the Body that oversees the smooth movement of Qi. However, this energy can get stuck and manifest physically as irritability, frustration, anger, PMS, moodiness, or anger. To soothe and ease the flow of the Liver meridian, adding sour foods (lemon water or pickled foods) to one diet is essential. As well, foods such as beets, asparagus, pea shoots, sprouts or milk thistle tea can aid in the smooth movement of qi. Avoid heavy and greasy foods which can stagnate the Liver.

Get outside. Take time to spring clean your home. Eat a lighter diet. Move your body to prevent stagnation. Get plenty of rest. Start your day off with hot water and lemon. Listen to your body's needs and your soul's desires to guide you forward. Your body innately knows what it needs. Trust it!

 

 

Du20 - Hundred Meetings

This amazing self-regulating point is either used to calm a person down or to increase one's energy. Whatever your energy need, Du20 will help. The Du Channel (also known as Governing Vessel) is one of the two extraordinary channels formed at conception and runs from the tip of the tail bone up along the spine to the crown of the head and down the middle of the face to end between the nose & top lip.

Du 20 is the highest point in the body and is the meeting point for all the yang channels of the body. The easiest way to feel this point is to place your hand on top of your head about 1cm away and you will feel a source of heat emanating from this spot. 

This is one of the two points used during the Yoga Nidra because it is so calming. It's functions are to calm the mind, lift spirits, and tonifies yang qi. It is used for headaches, vertigo, tinnitus, and prolapsed uterus or rectum. 

Massage this point when feeling drowsy for a little pick me up!

Stomach 25 - Celestial Pivot

This acupuncture point is Stomach 25 also known as Celestial Pivot because it is the center of the body where the heavens and earth meet. This point is locates about 2 inches laterally from the belly button and is good for all intestinal issues - constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain and distention. This time of year, we tend to enjoy more richer foods and indulge more because of the holidays. If your bowels, are not moving as normal, apply pressure to Stomach 25 for 2 minutes. 

Stress Relief with Acupuncture

Our lives are moving at a faster pace. We are more than ever constantly connected to computers and smartphones. We juggle many things at once. Then add in the worry of comparing your friends' lives on social media to one's own. No wonder why more people are stressing out and not finding ways to unwind from that stress. 

Thankfully, we do live in a state where Nature is abundant and it is easy to get outside for a walk; sit by a lake or river; go for a hike through the woods; or feel the crisp wind on your face as your ski/ride downhill. However, at times it's essential to reset the clock in other ways. Acupuncture is one of those tools.

In Chinese Medicine, the Liver meridian is considered to be the General of the Body, ensuring that everything is running smoothly and in order. However, when things begin to slow down or get stuck due to improper diet, lack of sleep, not enough or too much exercise, injury or lifestyle, this may through off the regular cadence of how the body operates. The Liver becomes stagnant.

When the energy or qi coursing its way through the Liver meridian (not the organ) becomes stagnant, one may have these symptoms:

  • Irritable
  • Angry
  • Emotionally feels stuck
  • Depressed
  • Sighs often
  • PMS
  • Pain on the sides 

Overtime, the Liver Qi Stagnation could lead to a deficiency within one's body. And one may experience, dry eyes, dry skin, or blurred vision. 

Acupuncture helps to restore the natural movement of energy within the body by ensuring the smooth flow of energy. When acupuncture points are stimulated the help the smooth flow of energy within the channels needled, as well as the rest of the body. The body has the natural ability to heal itself and sometimes it forgets or needs a little reminder. The stimulation of points aids the healing process to occur. 

Treatments tend to be about 40 minutes with the needles. This time allows for the energy to begin to rebalance. As well, the time resting on the massage table is a good way to turn off the sympathetic nervous system, which is turned on in times of stress. The trick is learning how to turn it off on a regular basis so that your body can unwind and destress and this is what acupuncture helps your body do naturally. At a time when more and more people are constantly stressed, and diseases that are associated (heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, arthritis, diabetes type 2)with stress are on the rise, it is important to find ways to relax.
